The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Oyo State Council, has accused the managements of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo, of refusing to implement Governor Seyi Makinde’s directive on pension increases for retirees, describing the action as a gross act of insubordination.

Addressing journalists in Ibadan on Monday, the Secretary of the union, Comrade (Dr.) Olusegun Abatan, said Governor Makinde had in January 2026 directed that the least-paid pensioner in the state should receive ₦25,000 monthly, while also approving the implementation of outstanding pension increases and consequential adjustments.

According to him, while institutions such as Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa; Oyo State College of Education, Lanlate; Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igbo-Ora; and Michael Adeniyi Koleoso Polytechnic, Shaki complied with the directive, LAUTECH and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education failed to do so despite repeated appeals.

“Those organs believe that any directive from the Governor is law with or without a circular and must be carried out strictly,” Abatan said.

He alleged that the union made several attempts to engage the managements of the two institutions but recorded little progress.

Abatan also disclosed that the union rejected a recent invitation from the LAUTECH management after waiting about 19 months for the implementation of the pension review.

“We saw that letter as a ploy to derail the press conference of today. We… waited for the past 19 months for the pensions of our members to be upgraded,” he said.

The NUP secretary said the approved pension increase was not limited to a flat ₦25,000 payment but included previous pension adjustments and arrears dating back to January 2025.

He, however, commended the management of Michael Adeniyi Koleoso Polytechnic, Shaki, for commencing implementation of the pension increase, urging LAUTECH and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education to follow suit.

The union further accused both institutions of implementing the new minimum wage for workers while excluding pensioners.

“This is in gross violation of Sections 210(3) and 173(3) of the Constitution… which state that pensions should also be increased anytime wages and salaries of workers are increased,” Abatan said.

He announced that the union would begin protests at both institutions from August 18, 2026, if the directive remained unimplemented, adding that it would also seek the intervention of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for a three-day warning strike.

“Our actions are not tailored to embarrass his pensioner-friendly administration but to whip into line the managements which had scoffed at and so blatantly disobeyed his directive,” Abatan said of the planned protest.
