The Federal Government has directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies to comply with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, as part of efforts to strengthen responsible data governance and build public trust in government.
the Head of Legal, Enforcement and Regulations, Nigeria Data Protection Commission, Babatunde Bamigboye, in statement said the directive is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s instruction that government institutions must rigorously capture information and safeguard it in accordance with the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.
He said MDAs are to appoint qualified Data Protection Officers to oversee compliance and advise management on lawful data processing, while communicating the names and contact details of the officers to the NDPC for registration.
Bamigboye stated that MDAs are also to provide adequate budgetary allocation for data protection compliance activities, including capacity building, awareness programmes, deployment of appropriate technical safeguards and periodic compliance audits.
