The Federal Government has approved the supply of six-seater electric tricycles to the Federal Polytechnic Offa in Kwara State under its One Product, One Polytechnic (OPOP) initiative. The programme is designed to promote innovation, technology transfer, entrepreneurship and institutional self-reliance across Nigerian polytechnics.
The approval was conveyed to the institution by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), according to the polytechnic’s spokesperson, Olayinka Iroye. He said the intervention includes the provision of six-seater electric tricycles and the construction of a modern electric vehicle charging station to support environmentally friendly transportation within the campus.
Iroye said the project would provide students and researchers with practical learning opportunities in electric mobility, renewable energy systems and sustainable engineering. He added that the initiative would improve intra-campus transportation while exposing students to emerging clean-energy technologies and industry practices.
The intervention is also expected to strengthen technology transfer, innovation and commercialisation at the institution. Iroye said it would support the development of specialised manpower needed for Nigeria’s growing electric mobility sector and provide valuable practical training for students and researchers.
The spokesperson said the project complements the polytechnic’s achievement in designing, developing and unveiling the OKIN EV1 electric vehicle. He added that the installation of modern charging infrastructure would position Federal Polytechnic Offa as a major electric vehicle charging hub in Kwara State and further strengthen its role in electric mobility development.
