For many years, the idea of a younger man marrying an older woman has been regarded as unusual in Nigerian society.

Available data suggest that such marriages remain relatively uncommon. According to the 2013 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey, only about 1.5 per cent of married women had husbands who were the same age or younger, with earlier reports putting the figure at around two per cent.

But beyond the statistics lies a bigger question: should a woman’s age determine whether she can have a successful relationship with a younger man?

For some Nigerians who spoke to Adamimogo 105.1 FM’s Joy Joseph, the answer is no, provided the age difference is reasonable and both partners are mature enough to understand and manage the demands of a relationship.

For instance, Mustapha Emmanuel took a broader position, arguing that age should not necessarily be a barrier when two people genuinely understand what they want from a relationship.

He maintained that maturity, compatibility and shared purpose should take precedence, particularly when the intention is marriage.

However, not everyone believes love and maturity should completely overshadow age.

Some respondents argued that a significant age gap could create challenges, especially in a society where traditional expectations about the roles of men and women remain deeply rooted.

For others, a younger man should only consider marrying an older woman if the difference in age is relatively small.

There are also those who believe the success of such relationships cannot be determined by age difference alone. They point to factors such as family background, emotional maturity, compatibility and the ability of couples to withstand pressure from relatives and society.

Despite the traditional preference for older men marrying younger women, relationships in which the woman is older are not entirely new in Nigeria.

Several public figures, including singer Peter Okoye and his wife, Lola Omotayo, as well as actor Stan Nze and his actress wife, have demonstrated that age differences do not necessarily determine the success or failure of a marriage.

Their relationships have also challenged some conventional assumptions about marriage and gender roles.

Ultimately, the debate over younger men marrying older women may be less about numbers and more about what happens between the two people involved.

Age may shape expectations, but maturity, compatibility, mutual respect and shared values could matter far more in determining whether a relationship stands the test of time.

Perhaps the real question is not who is older, but whether two people are mature and compatible enough to build a life together.
