The Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Umahi, has ordered immediate intervention on the deteriorating Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti road linking Ekiti and Kogi States, as well as the Benin-Agbor-Asaba road, following a directive from President Bola Tinubu.

The intervention is aimed at easing the hardship faced by motorists and commuters who have been stranded for hours and, in some cases, days due to the poor condition of the strategic routes.

Umahi said President Tinubu had directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene and take necessary corrective measures to restore movement on the affected roads.

“President Tinubu, GCFR, has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene and ensure that necessary corrective actions are taken to restore movement on the affected roads as quickly as possible.”

The Minister said the Federal Government was concerned about the worsening condition of the roads and determined to address the immediate challenges while pursuing permanent solutions.

In response to the presidential directive, Umahi has directed the Minister of State for Works to lead a team of ministry officials to the Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti axis to assess the situation and commence urgent remedial works.

“Tomorrow, I will be at the Benin–Asaba Expressway. I want Nigerians to know that when we get there, we will solve the problem. It is not caused by the Ministry of Works; it is caused by our attempts to involve the private sector.”

The intervention commenced at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, with officials of the Ministry already deployed to the affected areas.

While the intervention team moved into Ekiti and Kogi States, Umahi travelled to Benin, Edo State, alongside members of the National Assembly Works Committees to initiate a similar coordinated response on the Benin-Agbor-Asaba corridor.

The meeting in Benin is expected to bring together representatives of the Edo and Delta State Governments, as well as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and other relevant stakeholders.

The stakeholders are expected to work out immediate measures to address the difficulties confronting motorists along the strategic corridor.

Umahi accepted responsibility for the unfortunate situation on the affected roads and apologised to commuters who have experienced prolonged delays and hardship.

He assured motorists that the government’s intervention would not be limited to temporary relief.

According to the Minister, immediate remedial measures will be pursued alongside permanent solutions aimed at restoring the affected roads and improving their long-term reliability.

The Federal Ministry of Works said the interventions reflect the Federal Government’s commitment to responding promptly to critical road infrastructure challenges and reducing the burden on road users.
