Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau has resigned from office, announcing his decision at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.
Gusau’s resignation comes amid growing concerns over the state of Nigerian football, with members of the NFF Executive Committee reportedly joining him in stepping down.
The development follows the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, marking the first time Nigeria’s senior women’s national team has missed the tournament.
The Falcons suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the qualification play-off after earlier exiting the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations at the quarter-final stage following a loss to Cameroon.
The Super Eagles have also endured a difficult period, failing to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Beyond the teams’ disappointing results, the NFF has faced scrutiny over its administration and finances. The federation has come under pressure over its handling of a ₦17 billion Federal Government intervention fund released in 2024.
A separate fact-finding committee report also alleged that some NFF board members and officials influenced invitations to national teams for financial gain, further deepening concerns surrounding the federation’s management.
Gusau’s resignation comes just weeks before the NFF elective congress scheduled to take place on September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
His departure is expected to trigger further discussions about the leadership and direction of Nigerian football as the federation prepares for the forthcoming elections.
