Social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has said he will not hand over to the police the evidence backing his allegations that some security personnel assist kidnappers and bandits in Nigeria.
Otse made the disclosure on Thursday while reacting to an invitation from the Nigeria Police Force, saying he was willing to honour the invitation but would only present his evidence in court.
“I’m not going to be giving the police my evidence.
Why would I do that? I would be charged to court, and I would turn down the evidence in court,”
he said in a video posted on his Instagram page.
“Nigeria police has invited me to come and give evidence about my kidn@pping claims. I stand by my words. I will honour their invitation, but to be very honest, I won’t give them my evidence. I will be charged to court, and then I will tender the evidence in court”

The police had invited the activist to provide evidence supporting his allegation that officers manning checkpoints identify wealthy travellers and allegedly pass information about them to kidnappers to facilitate abductions.
The Force described the allegation as serious, unsubstantiated and capable of damaging the reputation of the police. It, however, said any evidence provided by Otse would be treated with urgency and thoroughly investigated.
Responding to the invitation, Otse said his lawyers were prepared to defend him and challenged the police to take him to court if they believed his comments amounted to an offence.
The latest development comes weeks after Otse accused the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Moshood Jimoh, of corruption in connection with the investigation of a case involving businessman Ahmed Tajudeen Akanbi.
The police later confirmed that Jimoh had been invited for questioning as part of an internal administrative review. Otse was also invited to substantiate his allegations.
According to the Force, the criminal case connected to the allegations was already before a court following legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
Otse, however, questioned the police response to his allegations, claiming that the Force took weeks to react to his accusations against Jimoh but moved swiftly to issue a statement following his more recent claims concerning checkpoint-related kidnappings.
The activist also alleged that he had previously released materials relating to the case, including claims involving the alleged torture of suspects, but said the police did not respond until he published additional material.
The dispute between the activist and the police is expected to continue as Otse maintains that he will reserve his evidence for any court proceedings arising from the allegations.
