The United States Mint has introduced a special-edition $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump’s portrait as part of celebrations marking the country’s 250th anniversary.
The commemorative coin carries Trump’s image alongside the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST”, in a design the Mint says reflects the history, pride and enduring legacy of the United States.
The coin was put on sale at $61 for a roll of 25 and $154.50 for a bag of 100. However, supplies appeared to run out within hours, with the coins subsequently marked as unavailable on the US Mint’s website.
Describing the release as a special celebration of a major national milestone, the Mint said the design was intended to be a significant addition to modern coin collections.
The appearance of Trump’s portrait on the coin has also drawn attention for its historical significance, as it represents the first time in roughly 100 years that the image of a living US president has appeared on American currency.
The development breaks with the longstanding tradition of reserving portraits on US currency for historical figures who are deceased.
Details surrounding the production and availability of the commemorative coin remain limited, with the BBC reporting that it has contacted the US Mint, the Treasury and the White House for further clarification.
