The presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, has ruled out a return to fuel subsidy if elected president in 2027, but called for a review of the petrol pricing framework to make fuel more affordable for Nigerians.

Makinde made the remarks on Monday during the inauguration of his 2027 presidential campaign office in Abuja.

The Oyo State governor faulted the high cost of petrol in Nigeria, questioning why consumers should continue to pay heavily for a product whose crude oil is produced locally.

“I will not bring back fuel subsidy if elected president, but we need to look at the petrol pricing framework in a way that it benefits Nigerians,” Makinde said.

He called for greater transparency across the crude oil value chain, from crude oil extraction and refining to transportation and distribution.

According to him, greater accountability in the sector is necessary to prevent Nigerians from bearing the burden of corruption and inefficiency within the petroleum industry.

Makinde said the focus should be on developing a pricing structure that reflects Nigeria’s status as an oil-producing country while ensuring that citizens benefit more directly from the nation’s natural resources.

He further stressed the need for transparency and accountability at every stage of the petroleum value chain to ensure that the benefits of domestic crude production and refining translate into improved living conditions for Nigerians.
