The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed his support for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027, saying his position remains unchanged.

Wike also clarified that he never promised that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would not field candidates for governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections in 2027.

The minister made the clarification in a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.

According to the statement, Wike also clarified that the “rainbow coalition” has no affiliation with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He described the coalition as a platform for members of different political parties who are supporting Tinubu’s re-election based on their assessment of his performance in office.

Wike sends a strong message to APC governors 🔥🔥🔥

“I heard some governors say the Rainbow coalition is to reduce the votes of our President (Tinubu), people who don’t have capacity. Where were you when we delivered Rivers State for Tinubu in 2023 without a Rainbow coalition?… pic.twitter.com/p1UGYaqiiE

“Politics is local, and those having problems in their states should resolve them instead of using the re-election of the President to whip up sentiments,” Wike said.

The former Rivers State governor recalled that he never met with the APC before he and other members of the G5 supported Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election.

He stressed that his support in 2027 was specifically for the President and should not be interpreted as a commitment to the APC or as an agreement that would prevent the PDP from participating in other elections.

Wike said the focus should be on mobilising support for Tinubu’s re-election at the presidential level, after which politicians could turn their attention to contests in their respective states.

“After the President has been re-elected, we can all go and face elections in our states,” he said.

He also dismissed the notion that politics was about simply moving from fourth position to becoming governor, arguing that political success should be based on genuine mobilisation and the ability to win support from the polling units.

Wike maintained that his position had always been to mobilise support for Tinubu’s second-term bid.

“What I said and stand for is that I will mobilise support for the re-election of the President. I never promised anyone that PDP will not field candidates to contest governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections,” he said.

On the rainbow coalition, Wike said, “Most importantly, the rainbow coalition has nothing to do with the APC. Rather, it is our own way of mobilising support across political parties for Mr President, who has done well to deserve a second term.”

The clarification comes amid political discussions over the alliances taking shape ahead of the 2027 elections and the possible implications of cross-party support for Tinubu’s re-election.

Earlier,  the All Progressives Congress APC State governors forum had warned against the creation of parallel political structures capable of undermining President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027,

Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, who FCT minister Nyesome Wike had recently accused of sponsoring political attacks against him, made the declaration on behalf of the governors.

The governors warned that coalition candidates flying different party flags could confuse rural voters, with the tensions already playing out in states including Rivers, Kwara, Gombe and Cross River.

Uzodimma stated that no arrangement that creates confusion, divided loyalty or competing interests within the party would be entertained.
