The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has commenced a seven-day spiritual seclusion ahead of the 2026 Olojo Festival in Ile-Ife, Osun State, while commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over what he described as non-interference in the activities of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The monarch made the remarks shortly before entering seclusion on Sunday evening as part of the traditional and spiritual rites preceding the annual Olojo Festival. His comments were contained in a statement issued by the Senior Media Officer of the Ooni’s Palace, Sodiq Lawal, on behalf of the Director of Media and Public Affairs, Otunba Moses Olafare.

Ogunwusi, who is also the Co-Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, said the perceived non-interference could help strengthen public confidence in the democratic process. He also commended residents of Osun State for participating in the recently concluded governorship election, saying elections should continue to provide citizens with the opportunity to freely choose their leaders.

The Ooni urged political leaders to place the welfare of Nigerians and the national interest above political differences, warning against actions and statements that could undermine Nigeria’s unity and sovereignty.

He said his prayers during the seven-day seclusion would include Nigeria’s democratic process, particularly as the country prepares for its next general elections, as well as peace, unity and sustainable progress.

Explaining the significance of the spiritual exercise, Ogunwusi said the seclusion would enable him to deepen his spiritual connection with his ancestors and prepare for the sacred rites associated with the Olojo Festival.

He added that the exercise forms part of the annual preparation for the wearing of the sacred Aare Crown and provides an opportunity to honour the traditions and legacies passed down through generations.

The Olojo Festival is one of the major cultural and spiritual celebrations associated with Ile-Ife and the Yoruba people, providing a platform for the preservation of indigenous traditions, ancestral heritage and cultural identity.

With the commencement of the Ooni’s seclusion, the spiritual phase of the 2026 Olojo Festival has begun ahead of the public ceremonies that will culminate in the monarch’s emergence in the sacred crown.
