The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting an inclusive and sustainable blue economy that harnesses the economic potential of the state’s waterways and coastal resources.
The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila, stated this while representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the 4th Ehingbeti Blue Economy Hub held in Lagos.
Oyekan-Ismaila noted that although the Ehingbeti initiative has strong historical ties to Lagos Island, the state’s blue economy agenda has expanded to cover coastal communities across the various divisions of Lagos.
She stressed that achieving sustainable growth in the sector requires collaboration among government institutions, the private sector, traditional institutions, coastal communities and other relevant stakeholders.
According to her, such collaboration is essential to unlocking the economic opportunities presented by Lagos’ waterways and coastal assets while ensuring sustainable development of the state’s coastal communities.
The Permanent Secretary also disclosed that Governor Sanwo-Olu had encouraged stakeholders at the summit to develop a comprehensive communiqué containing practical recommendations to advance the state’s blue economy agenda and strengthen sustainable coastal development.
The summit, themed “Securing Nigeria’s Blue Economy: Need to Strengthen Regulatory and Maritime Frameworks for Sustainable Coastal Development,” was held on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
