The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to improve electricity supply to critical water infrastructure with the development of a 26-megawatt (MW) embedded power project for the Iju-Akute Waterworks.
As part of the project, key stakeholders recently inspected power-generating equipment supplied by Jubaili Bros Nigeria for the Akute Independent Power Project, being developed by Agrigate Utilities Limited. The inspection was carried out ahead of the delivery and installation of equipment for the first phase, which is expected to generate 9MW, while subsequent phases will raise the total capacity to 26MW.
Speaking during the inspection, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, said reliable electricity was essential to the effective operation of critical public infrastructure, particularly water facilities. He urged stakeholders to ensure accountability, adherence to specifications and timely delivery of the project.
Ogunleye said the embedded power project would strengthen the reliability and sustainability of water services in Lagos, adding that its successful implementation must translate into lasting value for residents.
The Chief Executive Officer of Agrigate Utilities Limited, Olufemi Bakare, appreciated the state government and other project partners for their support, noting that collaboration among stakeholders had helped drive progress despite the tight delivery timeline.
Bakare reaffirmed the company’s commitment to completing the project within the agreed timeframe and providing the technical support required for its effective and sustainable operation. The company’s Chief Operating Officer, Lotu Akingbe, was also present.
Representatives of Jubaili Bros Nigeria, including its Head of Commercial, Mohammed Farhat, and General Manager, Ahmed Dahshi, also reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supplying equipment that meets the required specifications and providing the necessary technical services.
The inspection was also attended by the General Manager of the Lagos State Electrification Agency, Engr. K.A.T. Balogun; Director of Production, Engr. Agiri Mustapha; Director of Power, Engr. Olusaya-Stella, and other senior state government officials.
Following the inspection, arrangements are being finalised for the delivery, installation and deployment of the equipment for the first phase of the project. Upon completion, the 26MW embedded power project is expected to provide dedicated electricity to the Iju-Akute Waterworks and support more reliable water services across Lagos.
