World teachers’ Day 2026: Nigerian Teachers Demand Better Support

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark World Teachers’ Day, attention is again turning to the widening gap between what teachers are expected to deliver and the support available to them.

American educator Horace Mann once observed that a teacher who tries to teach without inspiring a desire to learn is “hammering on cold iron.” In Nigeria, however, the challenge extends beyond inspiration. Teachers are expected to produce excellence while working within a system strained by inadequate infrastructure, uneven distribution of personnel and limited resources.

Nigeria’s education system serves more than 39.8 million learners with about 1.18 million teachers. The figures point to the enormous responsibility placed on the teaching workforce, but they also expose the need to strengthen the system beyond simply increasing enrolment and staffing.

The 2026 World Teachers’ Day provides an opportunity to examine how governments and education authorities are responding to those pressures.

The occasion is particularly significant globally as it marks 60 years since the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which established international standards on teachers’ rights, responsibilities, preparation, recruitment, employment and working conditions.

UNESCO, UNICEF, the International Labour Organisation and Education International have used this year’s commemoration to call for stronger support for teachers, stressing that educators need the resources and conditions required to help build inclusive, peaceful and sustainable societies.

The scale of the global challenge is underscored by projections of a shortage of about 44 million teachers by 2030. For Nigeria, where education already faces significant structural challenges, the warning reinforces the need for long-term planning and investment in the profession.

One area where Nigeria has recorded progress is teacher professionalisation.

The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, under the leadership of Ronke Soyonbo, has registered more than 1.63 million certified teachers, providing a framework for professional accountability and quality assurance within the sector.

But professional registration alone cannot resolve the challenges confronting teachers. Better working conditions, adequate learning facilities, continuous training and equitable deployment of teachers remain central to improving educational outcomes.

The Federal Government is also introducing changes to how outstanding teachers and schools are recognised.

The Minister of State for Education, Prof Suwaiba Ahmad, recently disclosed that the selection process for the 2026 Presidents’ Teachers’ and Schools’ Excellence Awards had been fully digitalised.

According to Ahmad, the new system replaces the previous manual process and is intended to improve transparency, accountability, security and documentation in the selection of award recipients.

“For the first time, the selection process coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Education was digitalised in line with the African Union guidelines to ensure certainty, accountability and reference,” she said.

The reform reflects a broader push to make recognition within the education sector more transparent, but the larger question remains how such recognition can be matched with sustained investment in the people who deliver education every day.

World Teachers’ Day has been observed annually on October 5 since 1994. Sixty years after the international framework for protecting and professionalising the teaching profession was established, the central question for Nigeria is no longer simply whether teachers are capable of inspiring learners.

It is whether the system is prepared to give those teachers the conditions, tools and dignity required to do their jobs well.

For starters, a number of Nigerian States have declared the day work free to celebrate teachers in their domain.
