Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps,(LAGESC),has arrested 62 individuals during an enforcement operation against street begging in the Ajah and Lekki areas of Lagos State.
The operation, which was carried out by officials of the corps, involved the apprehension of 29 street beggars and 33 children allegedly involved in illegal street begging.
Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the development stating that the individuals were apprehended during the enforcement exercise.
According to Wahab, the 33 children were allegedly being exploited for street begging, raising concerns over the use of children for commercial begging in different parts of the state.
He said the enforcement operation was part of the government’s efforts to address street begging and prevent the exploitation of vulnerable persons, particularly children.
The commissioner added that all 62 individuals had been transferred to the appropriate authorities for further profiling, investigation and necessary action.
The latest operation comes amid continued enforcement by the Lagos State Government against street begging and activities considered to contribute to environmental and social challenges in the metropolis.
The government has continued to maintain that the measures are aimed at curbing street begging, protecting children from exploitation and promoting a safer and more orderly environment across Lagos State.

62 people have been apprehended during an enforcement operation targeting illegal street begging in the Ajah and Lekki areas of Lagos. I counted over 100 street beggars in Badore the other day alone. One-off enforcement operations may provide temporary relief, but without regular monitoring and follow-up, the same problem will quickly return.
