US President Donald Trump has approved the execution by firing squad of former US Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, who was sentenced to death for the 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.
The decision was announced on Monday by Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell, who said Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had recommended the execution and that Trump subsequently approved it.
Parnell said the Secretary of the Army would determine the date and location for the execution.
Hasan was convicted by a military jury in 2013 on 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in connection with the November 5, 2009 attack.
He opened fire at the Texas military facility while soldiers were undergoing processing for deployment, killing 13 people and leaving 32 others wounded.
Hasan, who was serving as an Army psychiatrist at the time of the attack, was sentenced to death after being found guilty.
The case has remained one of the most significant acts of violence on a US military installation, with Hasan’s death sentence subject to the military justice system and subsequent legal proceedings.
