The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has distributed 172 recycling bins and collected recyclable materials from households at Osborne Estate, Ikoyi, as part of efforts to promote waste separation and recycling across Lagos State.
The exercise was conducted under the authority’s Waste-Free Lagos Pilot Scheme and recycling buy-back initiative, which aim to encourage residents to separate household waste and recognise the value of recyclable materials.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the initiative was designed to strengthen public participation in recycling and promote a sustainable waste management system.
He explained that the authority collected recyclable materials from 64 bins distributed to households the previous week, while an additional 108 bins were provided during the latest exercise, bringing the total number distributed to 172.
The exercise also featured door-to-door sensitisation, during which LAWMA officials engaged household waste handlers on the objectives of the programme and the proper use of the recycling bins.
Gbadegesin stressed that effective recycling begins at the household level, noting that separating recyclable materials from other waste would improve resource recovery and reduce the volume of refuse requiring final disposal.
He urged residents to participate actively in the buy-back initiative by sorting recyclable materials and placing them in the designated bins.
The Waste-Free Lagos Pilot Scheme forms part of LAWMA’s broader efforts to promote a circular economy, encourage responsible waste disposal and advance a cleaner and more sustainable environment across Lagos State.
