Lagos State Deputy Governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has pledged to strengthen the state’s integrated transportation system to reduce traffic congestion and travel time if elected governor.
Hamzat made the pledge on Tuesday during separate interviews with Lagos Television (LTV), Eko FM 107.5 and Lagos Traffic Radio 96.1 FM in Agidingbi, where he outlined plans to improve connectivity across road, rail and water transport networks.
He said the proposed measures would include providing more Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses, decongesting bus stops and improving emergency response to road accidents to prevent traffic build-ups. According to him, an efficient transportation system is critical to housing, education, business development and youth empowerment.
The APC candidate also promised to complete the Blue Line rail extension to Okokomaiko and connect it to the Red Line at the National Theatre, Iganmu. He said the projects would improve access to Marina and provide better rail connections for residents of areas such as Yaba, Agege and the Okokomaiko corridor, including students of Lagos State University (LASU).
On water transportation, Hamzat said the Omi-Eko project would expand commuting options through the provision of seven electric ferries, adding that five had already been delivered. He stressed the need to maximise Lagos’ waterways as an alternative to road transport and rail services.
Addressing the proposed Fourth Mainland Bridge, Hamzat said the state would pursue partnerships with private investors to finance and deliver the project while exercising caution over borrowing. He noted that the bridge’s design and cost assessment had involved private-sector participation, with discussions held with prospective concessionaires.
He added that public-private partnerships would require clear agreements on responsibilities, including tolling arrangements that could enable investors to recover their investments.
Hamzat further called for improved traffic management and faster responses by security operatives to accidents and road repairs, noting that Lagos’ high volume of vehicles makes effective coordination essential to preventing prolonged congestion.
He said his transportation agenda would focus on connecting different transport modes, improving commuter access and reducing travel delays to boost productivity and support economic growth across Lagos State.
