The Lagos State House of Assembly has commended the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) for its role in ensuring that healthcare facilities across the state comply with established standards, pledging additional support to strengthen the agency’s operations.
The lawmakers also promised to explore ways of addressing the agency’s funding and office accommodation challenges to enable it to discharge its regulatory responsibilities more effectively.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Health Services and Primary Healthcare, Hon. Musbau Aina Lawal, gave the assurance during an oversight visit by members of the Assembly to HEFAMAA.
Lawal acknowledged the agency’s contributions to the state’s healthcare sector, noting that its responsibility for monitoring and regulating health facilities across Lagos required adequate resources and institutional support.
He said the visit was aimed at familiarising lawmakers with the agency’s operations, assessing its challenges and identifying areas where legislative intervention could improve its performance.
“The Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency is playing a very key role in the health sector in ensuring that all health facilities are in the best condition. Considering the wide area they have to cover, we know that they need more assistance to perform better than they are doing presently,” he said.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the House Committee on Overseas Investments and Sustainable Development Goals, Hon. Gbolahan Ogunleye; Chairman of the House Committee on Home Affairs, Hon. AbdulKareem Jubril; and Chairman of the House Committee on Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Hon. (Dr.) Rauf Olawale, reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to supporting the agency.
The lawmakers emphasised the need to address HEFAMAA’s operational difficulties and strengthen its capacity to monitor healthcare facilities, enforce regulatory requirements and promote compliance with established standards.
In her response, the Executive Secretary of HEFAMAA, Dr. Victoria Egunjobi, expressed appreciation to the lawmakers for the visit and their commitment to assisting the agency.
She assured the delegation that HEFAMAA would remain committed to its statutory responsibilities of monitoring, inspecting and regulating healthcare facilities across Lagos State.
Egunjobi added that the agency would continue working to ensure compliance with healthcare standards and promote quality service delivery for residents.
The Assembly’s pledge highlights the importance of legislative support in strengthening healthcare regulation, improving institutional capacity and ensuring that health facilities across Lagos State provide safe and quality services.
