The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has disclosed that Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), swiftly returned billions of naira in donations after discovering the funds were linked to criminal activities.
According to Olukoyede, the church leadership ordered the massive refund within just one day of being notified that the money was illicit.
The EFCC boss made this revelation during a gathering of RCCG workers in the early hours of Saturday, November 7.
The meeting was part of the church’s preparations for its upcoming annual Holy Ghost Congress. According to reports by Church Times Nigeria, the clergyman had specifically invited the anti-graft agency’s head to speak on financial integrity and the importance of maintaining transparent records within religious institutions.
Narrating the sequence of events, Olukoyede explained that an individual had contributed the huge sum toward an RCCG project. However, subsequent investigations exposed the funds as the fruit of financial crime. The EFCC chairman commended Pastor Adeboye for his swift action in returning the money immediately after the church was tipped off.
The report also noted that the EFCC chairman withheld certain crucial details, including the donor’s identity, the exact sum of money involved, and the specific church project the funds were meant to support.
