Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged President Bola Tinubu to support the re-election bids of National Assembly leaders and lawmakers in 2027, citing their continued backing for his administration.
Akpabio made the appeal in Abuja during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, expressing confidence in the relationship between the President and members of the National Assembly.
He urged Tinubu to encourage lawmakers seeking another term, arguing that their return would strengthen the administration’s legislative support. “If the National Assembly is so much with you, why don’t you encourage them to come back and support you in the second term?” he asked.
The Senate President also assured Tinubu that the legislature would remain firmly behind him, declaring that the National Assembly would not be used to undermine the President.
“Nobody can break through the National Assembly to dislodge you. We are solidly behind you,” Akpabio said.
He further disclosed plans to bring lawmakers from different political parties, including opposition members, to a future gathering, subject to the President’s approval. He said senators were eager to join him and sought permission to invite the Senate minority leader and other opposition lawmakers.
Akpabio also cautioned state governors against neglecting their constituents while pursuing other political offices before completing their tenure. Drawing on his experience as a two-term governor of Akwa Ibom State, he urged them to remain focused on their responsibilities.
“For my brothers who are governors, I want you to know that you must not abandon your people,” he said, adding that governors should not begin pursuing other offices prematurely.
Although he did not mention any governor by name, the remarks followed Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma’s declaration at the same event that he intended to contest for a Senate seat.
“I will be on the ballot as a senatorial candidate,” Uzodimma told the gathering.
Akpabio also attributed his political success to maintaining a strong relationship with the electorate, citing more than 25 years of experience in politics.
“Take it from me. I’ve been in this business for over 25 years, and I always win. And why I always win is because I stand with people,” he said.
