Alimosho General Hospital, Igando, has taken free health screening, medical consultations and preventive healthcare services to traders at Ikotun Market as part of efforts by the Lagos State Government to bring quality healthcare closer to residents.
The outreach attracted a large number of market men and women, providing traders who may not have the time or financial resources to regularly visit healthcare facilities with access to professional medical services within their business environment.
Speaking at the event, the Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer of Alimosho General Hospital, Dr. Akinyele Akinlade, said the initiative was deliberately organised to take healthcare services directly to the people.
He stressed that quality healthcare goes beyond treating illnesses after symptoms appear, noting that some people may be living with underlying health conditions without knowing because such illnesses do not always show noticeable symptoms at the early stages.
Akinlade therefore emphasised the importance of regular medical check-ups, early detection and healthy lifestyle choices, adding that identifying health conditions early allows for timely treatment and helps prevent serious complications.
The Medical Director also disclosed plans to establish a new clinic that would offer more convenient and premium healthcare services for residents who can afford them. He urged the traders to make their health a priority and avoid waiting until they become seriously ill before seeking medical attention.
The Chairman of Friends of Alimosho General Hospital, Dr. Rukayat Ajibola-Bakare, said the outreach was aimed at supporting community members who may face financial challenges in accessing regular healthcare services.
She dismissed the belief that medical check-ups are only necessary for educated people or those already experiencing illness, stressing that healthcare services and preventive health checks are important for everyone.
Also speaking, the Vice Chairman and Supervisor for Health, Igando-Ikotun LCDA, Hon. Prince Adewunmi Dada, commended the Lagos State Government and the hospital management for the initiative and appreciated the traders for their participation.
Dada encouraged residents to enrol in the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme, describing it as an affordable option for accessing healthcare. He advised residents to embrace regular medical check-ups and avoid delaying treatment until health conditions become severe.
The medical team subsequently attended to participants through various health screening and consultation services, reaffirming Alimosho General Hospital’s commitment to promoting preventive healthcare and taking quality medical services closer to the people.
