The management of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI), Ikere-Ekiti, has dismissed reports linking a recent fatal stampede to its Second Convocation Ceremony, describing such claims as misleading.
In a statement issued by the Registrar, F.A. Adeusi, the institution clarified that no stampede or violent incident occurred within the university premises during or after the convocation, which it said was conducted peacefully and without disruption.
According to the university, the tragic incident took place at a private off-campus venue, Emirate Hotel, where some graduands had organised a celebration party independent of the official event. The gathering reportedly turned chaotic following a disagreement that escalated into a fight, resulting in a stampede.
The university confirmed, with deep regret, the death of two graduands and another student in the incident, extending condolences to the families and loved ones affected.
BOUESTI urged the media and the public to verify information before publication and avoid associating the unfortunate development with the institution’s official activities.
In a related development, the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Falade Michael, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. He also called on residents of Ikere-Ekiti to remain calm, assuring that those responsible will be identified and brought to justice.
The police command reiterated its commitment to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, even as the university reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining safety, order, and integrity across its operations.
