The trial into the June 5, 2022, terror attack on St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, continued on Tuesday with chilling testimonies from two additional prosecution witnesses at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The witnesses provided vivid and harrowing accounts of the assault, which occurred during a Sunday Mass marking the Feast of Pentecost. Gunmen had stormed the church, locked the main entrance, and opened fire on worshippers before detonating explosives.
Recall that the coordinated attack claimed at least 41 lives and left over 100 people injured, deeply traumatizing the Owo community.
The Department of State Services (DSS), which is leading the prosecution, also presented further exhibits to the court as part of its case against the five suspects. The accused, Idris Omeiza (25), Al Qasim Idris (20), Jamiu Abdulmalik (26), Abdulhaleem Idris (25), and Momoh Otuho Abubakar (47), are facing an amended nine-count charge bordering on terrorism.
All defendants have maintained their plea of not guilty.
