The former Lagos State Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Dayo Ekong, on Wednesday announced her defection to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), citing the new party’s “promising and emerging future.”
Ekong, who spoke in Lagos, lamented the prolonged leadership crisis and legal battles that have plagued the LP since 2023, saying the situation influenced her decision to leave.
She disclosed that she now serves as the Southwest Vice Chairman of the NDC and that preparations are underway to ensure hitch-free congresses across the region.
“I have moved on and gone to NDC. In fact, I am currently the National Vice Chairman of the party for the whole of the Southwest,” she said.
Ekong explained that her defection was driven by the need to safeguard her political future, noting that internal crises within parties can hinder personal ambitions.
“I am a politician and I have political aspirations. The way political parties are beset by all sorts of problems and leadership crisis is sickening. One just has to find a way to achieve goals at the end of the day, so I have to move forward,” she added.
Speaking on the prospects of the party, she expressed optimism about the NDC’s growing influence, stating that it is gaining momentum nationwide and represents a “hope for the future.”+
