The Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, has said that further amendment to the Electoral Act will largely be informed by the outcomes and observations from the ongoing Ekiti State governorship election and other bye-elections currently going on in some parts of Nigeria.
Bamidele made the remarks on Saturday while addressing newsmen on the conduct of the Ekiti governorship election.
He explained that the experiences gathered from the Ekiti governorship election, alongside other bye-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), would provide lawmakers with practical insights into areas requiring legislative intervention.
The Senate Leader said the objective of the proposed amendments is to address identified gaps in the existing Electoral Act and improve the country’s democratic process.
Bamidele stressed that the National Assembly would work closely with relevant stakeholders, including INEC, security agencies, political parties, election observers, and civil society organisations, to ensure that any amendments reflect the realities of election administration in Nigeria.
