The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing transportation costs for Nigerians by accelerating the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cheaper and cleaner alternative to conventional fuels.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, disclosed that more than $2 billion in private investment has been secured since the Presidential CNG Initiative was launched in 2023.

According to the minister, more than 120,000 vehicles have so far been converted to CNG through over 400 conversion centres across the country, while more than 90 CNG refuelling stations are currently operational nationwide.

Ekpo also revealed that 7,700 technicians have been trained under the programme, with more than 10,000 jobs created.

He said commuters, transport operators and fleet owners were already benefiting from significant savings in fuel costs as the adoption of CNG continues to grow.

The minister commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive for the establishment of 500 additional CNG refuelling stations, which he said would increase the national network to 1,000 stations.

Ekpo urged more state governments to participate actively in the programme, stressing that broader adoption of CNG would help lower transportation costs and reduce the economic burden on Nigerians.

He maintained that expanding the CNG network would also support the country’s transition towards cleaner and more affordable energy for transportation.
