A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirant for the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Daniel Ayodeji Ogunbusuyi, has criticised the removal of fuel subsidy, arguing that government should have addressed corruption within the subsidy regime rather than abolishing it.
Ogunbusuyi, who is seeking to represent Ido/Osi Constituency I in the Ekiti State House of Assembly, made the remarks during a campaign rally held by PDP governorship candidate, Dr. Oluwole Oluyede, in Ido-Ekiti on Saturday.
The event attracted hundreds of supporters and party leaders, including former Head of Service Dr. Gbenga Faseluka, campaign Director-General Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe, former Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Kola Oluwawole, former Senator Duro Faseyi and PDP deputy governorship candidate Hon. Deji Ogunsakin.
Speaking at the rally, Dr. Oluyede promised to tackle poverty, unemployment and insecurity if elected governor.
Ogunbusuyi expressed confidence in the PDP candidate’s ability to fulfil his promises, saying a PDP administration would improve living conditions across the state.
”The problem was not fuel subsidy itself but the corruption surrounding its implementation,” he said. “By removing the subsidy instead of addressing the corruption, government has increased the hardship faced by ordinary Nigerians.”
According to him, rising fuel costs have triggered increases in food prices, housing costs and transportation expenses, placing additional pressure on households.
The assembly aspirant also outlined his record of community service, including educational support programmes, youth empowerment initiatives, ICT training, assistance for widows and orphans, and sports development schemes.
He pledged to focus on community development, rehabilitation of healthcare centres and schools, youth empowerment and improved security if elected.
Ogunbusuyi urged residents to participate actively in future elections, warning against voter apathy and vote-buying.
”If people stay away from the polls, they create opportunities for election manipulation. Citizens must vote, protect their votes and reject inducements that undermine democracy,” he said.
He called on voters in Ido/Osi Constituency I and across Ekiti State to support the PDP and its governorship candidate in the next election
