The Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources has received 10 new waste compactor trucks donated by the Lagos State Lottery and Gaming Authority to strengthen waste management operations across the state.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab described the donation as a testament to effective inter-agency collaboration and corporate social responsibility.
According to the commissioner, the additional trucks will enhance waste evacuation services in strategic locations across Lagos, particularly in areas with high waste generation and communities requiring improved collection services.
The state government noted that Lagos generates more than 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, necessitating continuous investments in infrastructure and innovative waste management solutions.
The commissioner said the state has moved beyond the traditional “collect-and-dump” approach and is pursuing a sustainable zero-waste economy where waste is treated as a valuable resource. He added that several Memoranda of Understanding have been signed with local and international partners to divert nearly 5,000 metric tonnes of waste from the daily waste stream through recycling, reuse, and resource recovery initiatives.
The newly acquired compactor trucks are expected to improve operational efficiency, reduce waste collection turnaround time, and support the monthly environmental sanitation exercise aimed at maintaining cleaner communities across the state.
The commissioner commended the Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Lottery and Gaming Authority, Bashir Abiola Are, for the donation, describing it as a contribution that aligns with the administration’s vision of a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos.
He also called on other government agencies, private sector organisations, and corporate stakeholders to support environmental sustainability efforts, stressing that maintaining a clean city requires collective action from all sectors of society.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally sustainable Lagos for residents.
