The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has applauded Nigeria’s policy direction, strategic reforms, and commitment to global aviation standards, citing the country’s steady progress in the sector.

The commendation was given by IATA’s Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, Kamil Alawadhi during a special session of the IATA Focus Africa Conference in Addis Ababa, where he described Nigeria’s aviation industry as being on a clear path of transformation.

Alawadhi also unveiled Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, as one of Africa’s four most prominent aviation leaders, noting that the recognition reflects purposeful leadership, bold reforms, and measurable progress.

He highlighted Nigeria’s effective implementation of the Cape Town Convention and the IDERA framework, as well as its 91.4 per cent safety oversight rating by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which positions the country among leading aviation nations on the continent.

According to Alawadhi, Keyamo’s engagement with global stakeholders and efforts to resolve longstanding industry challenges have boosted investor confidence and improved operational stability in Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem.

Reacting, the minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, said the recognition underscores growing continental acknowledgement of his principal’s leadership and reforms, adding that the administration has been marked by policy clarity, international collaboration, and decisive actions aimed at ensuring sustainable growth.

He added that Keyamo’s inclusion among Africa’s top aviation figures reinforces Nigeria’s rising profile as a key driver of aviation transformation on the continent, in line with the conference theme, “Elevating Aviation Safety, Connectivity and Operational Efficiency in Africa.”
