All is now set for an exciting climax to the fifth edition of the Prof. Akin Oyebode Cup, as the competition reaches its grand finale today at Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
With goals, emerging talents and knockout drama defining the tournament, the final promises a compelling contest between defending champions Irepodun/Ifelodun LFC Youth Team and Aiyekire LFC Youth Team in the boys’ category.
Held under the theme, “Building to Last,” the competition continues to provide a platform for young footballers from Ekiti State’s Local Football Councils to showcase their abilities, gain competitive experience and attract attention from talent scouts.
Irepodun/Ifelodun head into the final with championship experience and a demonstrated ability to thrive in contrasting situations. They announced their title ambitions with an emphatic 8–3 victory over Ekiti West in the quarter-finals before edging Oye 1–0 in the semi-finals.
Their impressive attacking output, coupled with their disciplined performance in the last four, makes them a formidable opponent as they seek to retain their crown.
Aiyekire, however, will be eager to upset the defending champions after an emphatic 6–0 semi-final demolition of Ikole.
Taiwo Ogunkoya stole the spotlight with a hat-trick, while Samuel Amusanyin scored twice. Okeke Peace completed the rout, highlighting the depth of attacking talent available to Aiyekire.
Another standout performance came from Ademola Lukman, who was credited with four goals in a single knockout match during the quarter-finals, further underlining the tournament’s capacity to uncover promising young players.
The quarter-final stage also produced remarkable scoring statistics. According to figures released by the organisers, 22 goals were scored during the round, setting records for the highest number of goals in a single matchday and at a knockout stage.
The 11-goal thriller between Irepodun/Ifelodun and Ekiti West was the highest-scoring fixture, while Irepodun/Ifelodun’s eight-goal haul established a team scoring record.
The round also featured 15 different goalscorers, with one match recording eight individual scorers, demonstrating the spread of attacking contributions across the competition.
The semi-finals added another 10 goals across the available results, including seven in the boys’ category and three in the girls’ encounter between Irepodun/Ifelodun and Oye. Irepodun/Ifelodun emerged victorious in the girls’ match, winning 2–1 to strengthen their challenge across both categories.
Beyond the goals and individual brilliance, discipline has remained an important aspect of the competition. The opening matchday produced four yellow cards and one red card, highlighting the need for young players to combine competitive ambition with composure and respect for the rules.
Coaches have also played a crucial role in shaping the tournament, testing their players’ tactical awareness, preparation and ability to perform under pressure. While Irepodun/Ifelodun have demonstrated a balance between attacking quality and defensive organisation, Aiyekire’s attacking display against Ikole has raised expectations ahead of the decisive encounter.
The competition’s growing digital presence has further enhanced its reach. Through match coverage, live streams, highlights and online results, alongside engagement with Afriskaut and Sofascore, the tournament is helping extend the visibility of emerging talents beyond the stadium.
Organised by Phoenix Athletics Sports Limited, the Prof. Akin Oyebode Cup has continued to strengthen its position as a grassroots football development platform in Ekiti State.
As the teams prepare for the final showdown, the central question remains: will Irepodun/Ifelodun’s experience deliver another title, or will Aiyekire’s attacking firepower crown a new champion?
