The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Deji Doherty, has unveiled a 10-point agenda centred on infrastructure, education, healthcare, affordable housing and economic development ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Doherty, in a statement on Tuesday, called on Lagos youths to participate actively in the forthcoming election, urging them to support accountable governance and drive political change in the state.
He said the proposed agenda was designed to address the challenges facing residents across Lagos State’s 20 Local Government Areas, with a focus on improving public services, easing transportation difficulties and raising living standards.
The PDP candidate identified road infrastructure and transportation as key priorities, promising to develop efficient road networks to reduce persistent traffic congestion. He also pledged increased investment in education, vocational skills and human capital development, alongside improved access to healthcare and stronger general hospital capacity.
On housing, Doherty said his proposed administration would pursue affordable housing schemes, particularly low-cost high-rise developments located close to employment centres, to make accommodation more accessible to residents.
He also promised to strengthen security through technology-driven measures, including drones and surveillance systems, as well as regional cooperation across the South-West to address security challenges.
Doherty said his experience in business and longstanding membership of the PDP informed his commitment to offering Lagos residents an alternative to the current administration.
“This is not rhetoric. It is a commitment built on forty years of building businesses, creating jobs in Lagos, and serving the PDP without any sort of defection from our dear party since 1999,” he said.
He added that Lagos needed leadership that prioritised planning, transparency and inclusive governance, promising to ensure that government policies addressed the needs of residents across all wards.
The candidate also urged young people to draw lessons from the October 20, 2020, #EndSARS protests, which demanded an end to police brutality and greater accountability from public institutions. He described peaceful protest as a fundamental democratic right through which citizens could demand better governance and respect for their dignity.
Doherty said he would work with his running mate, Mrs Khadijat Bello, and the Lagos PDP leadership to reduce the cost of living, improve public services and expand economic opportunities if elected.
He criticised what he described as elitist tendencies in the state’s political system, arguing that ordinary residents continued to face economic hardship despite years of governance under successive administrations.
Doherty urged Lagos residents, particularly young voters, to support his proposed agenda in the 2027 election, calling on them to organise and participate in the democratic process to achieve the change they desire.
