Lagos State Government has received 35 new buses powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electricity as part of efforts to reduce transportation costs and improve public transportation across the state.
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) confirmed the delivery in a statement titled, “Renewed Hope in Motion, describing the development as a collaboration with the Lagos State Government.
LAMATA said Lagos requires about 15,000 buses to adequately meet the transportation needs of its residents but currently has just over 1,000 buses, saying the agency also announced plans to receive 500 additional CNG buses and 50 electric buses by the last quarter of 2026.
The agency has studied alternative fuel options for several years to identify cheaper and more sustainable ways of operating public buses. It added that CNG buses are cheaper to operate than petrol-powered buses because gas costs less than petrol, which could help reduce transportation fares for residents.
According to the Head Asset Deployment and recovery of the presidential initiative on CNG &EVs, Ahmed Katuka, the initiative is a collaboration between the state and the federal government, to reduce transportation cost.
Katuka further explained that the agency has been studying alternative fuel for many years to find cheaper ways to run buses.
He also stated that the CNG buses are cheaper to run than petrol buses because gas is cheaper than petrol and will help to reduce transport fare for residents.
Lamata has not yet announced when the 35 buses will begin carrying passengers or the routes they will operate. However, it said the buses will soon be deployed for passenger service as part of efforts to reduce waiting times and improve public transportation in Lagos.
