The Lagos State Government has shut down the Oshodi Resettlement Market following a violent clash between traders and officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) during an enforcement operation.
The incident reportedly occurred earlier on Wednesday when LAGESC officers were carrying out a routine enforcement exercise targeting hoodlums and beggars allegedly operating around the market area.
According to the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, traders at the market attacked the enforcement team and obstructed officers from arresting individuals accused of vandalising operational vehicles belonging to the agency.
The commissioner disclosed the development in a statement, noting that the situation escalated into violence, leading to the immediate shutdown of the market by the state government.
He explained that the enforcement operation was part of ongoing efforts to maintain environmental order and address unlawful activities around public spaces, particularly in high-traffic areas such as Oshodi.
Authorities said the affected market would remain closed pending further review, while investigations into the incident and the identities of those involved in the attack are expected to commence.
The government warned that attacks on enforcement officers would not be tolerated, stressing that such actions undermine public safety and environmental regulation efforts across the state.
LAGESC, working alongside other enforcement units under the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, has continued to carry out operations aimed at restoring sanitation and order in public spaces across Lagos.
