The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has dismissed reports alleging that the State Government failed to compensate the family of the late highway sanitation worker, Mrs. Aishat Muhammed, who tragically died in the line of duty on May 7, 2025.
In a statement, LAWMA described the claims by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) as inaccurate and not reflective of the true sequence of events.
The agency explained that following the incident, discussions were immediately initiated through its operational partner, Highway Managers, the company that directly engaged the deceased, to reach a compensation agreement with the family.
According to LAWMA, a total of ₦4,340,000 was paid to the deceased’s son as full and final settlement.
The payment covered insurance settlement, burial support, and additional financial assistance, including salary support extended to the family after the incident.
LAWMA confirmed that the payment was duly received and that the matter was considered concluded.
The Authority expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss and extended its continued sympathies to the family.
LAWMA also reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare, safety, and protection of all sanitation workers in Lagos State, noting that compliance and safety measures have been strengthened to safeguard its workforce.
The agency urged media organisations to seek proper clarification before publication to ensure accurate, balanced, and responsible reporting.
