LIV Golf has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States, with court documents showing that the breakaway league owes at least $45 million to current and former players.

The petition was filed on Tuesday as LIV seeks to restructure its business following the withdrawal of multibillion-dollar financial backing from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).

The league said the Chapter 11 process is aimed at preserving its operations while it works towards restructuring the company.

LIV has also identified BC Partners as a new investor following PIF’s decision in April to withdraw its funding.

According to documents filed with the bankruptcy court, two-time major champion Jon Rahm has the largest unsecured claim among the league’s 30 biggest creditors, with $7.5 million listed as outstanding.

Other prominent players on the list include Bryson DeChambeau, who is owed $5.7 million; Dustin Johnson, $5.5 million; Cameron Smith, $4.8 million; and Tyrrell Hatton, $3.4 million.

Brooks Koepka, who left LIV to return to the PGA Tour in January, is also listed as a creditor with an unsecured claim of $1.7 million.

Overall, 14 current and former LIV players appear among the 30 largest unsecured creditors, with their combined claims exceeding $45 million.

However, a source familiar with the figures told BBC Sport that the amounts listed represent money owed and unpaid for the third quarter of 2026, rather than the players’ total contractual entitlements.

LIV’s court filing estimates the company’s assets at between $100 million and $500 million, while its liabilities are put at between $500 million and $1 billion.

The league plans to launch a new structure in which players will hold the majority ownership early next year.

The Chapter 11 proceedings are also understood to give LIV an opportunity to begin discussions with players about their involvement in the proposed player-owned league.
