France and Spain will reignite one of international football’s fiercest rivalries on Tuesday when they meet in Dallas for a place in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The semi-final pits together two European heavyweights, with 2018 champions France chasing a third consecutive World Cup final appearance, while Spain, winners in 2010, are seeking to become only the fourth nation in history to simultaneously hold the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship titles.
The clash is expected to be dominated by the battle between France captain Kylian Mbappé and Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, representing two generations of footballing brilliance.
Mbappé has once again underlined his status as one of the world’s finest players, leading France’s formidable attack with eight goals in six matches to share the tournament’s Golden Boot lead with Argentina captain Lionel Messi. The Real Madrid forward has also recorded a tournament-leading 11 goal contributions.
The 27-year-old recently became France’s all-time leading scorer with 64 international goals, surpassing Olivier Giroud, and is now closing in on Messi’s all-time World Cup scoring record with 19 goals in the competition.
Former France striker Olivier Giroud attributed Mbappé’s remarkable rise to his ambition and self-belief, describing the forward as one of the game’s most exceptional talents.
On the opposite side stands 19-year-old Yamal, whose emergence has drawn comparisons with Mbappé’s breakthrough at the 2018 World Cup. After helping Spain win UEFA Euro 2024 and finishing runner-up in the Ballon d’Or voting last year, the Barcelona star entered the World Cup with high expectations.
However, a hamstring injury suffered before the tournament has limited his impact, with the winger scoring just once in five appearances so far.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has urged the teenager to remain patient, insisting his defining moment at the tournament is still to come.
“I ask him to be calm. He came of age last year and is still only 19. He should enjoy his football. The big day for Lamine has yet to come at this World Cup,” the Spanish coach said.
With a place in the World Cup final at stake, Tuesday’s encounter promises to be one of the biggest matches of the tournament as France’s proven firepower meets Spain’s youthful ambition.
