Mikel Merino scored twice as Spain came from behind to beat Croatia 2-1 in Split and book their place in the Nations League quarter-finals.
Croatia took the lead through Ivan Perisic in the first half, but Spain fought back after the break with Merino coming off the bench to change the game.
The Arsenal midfielder levelled in the 61st minute after Dani Olmo picked him out inside the box, giving Spain a way back into the contest.
Croatia’s hopes of holding on suffered a major setback with 10 minutes remaining when Perisic was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Marc Cucurella.
Spain then pressed for the winner and Merino delivered in the 88th minute, producing a superb turn before firing past Dominik Livakovic to complete his brace.
The victory secured Spain’s fourth win in four Group A3 matches and extended their unbeaten run to 42 games.
Spain also moved three points clear of England at the top of the group, with two matches remaining.
Croatia had started strongly and took advantage of Spain’s slow opening when Perisic reacted quickest after Unai Simon saved Igor Matanovic’s effort, heading the rebound into the net.
