The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down three alcohol manufacturing companies in Ota, Ogun State, for allegedly violating the Federal Government’s ban on the production of alcoholic beverages in sachets and small PET bottles.
According to a statement issued by the agency, the enforcement operation was led by the Assistant Director of NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, Kunle Ojo. The agency said the operation uncovered multiple regulatory violations at the affected facilities.
NAFDAC said its officials first inspected one of the factories last Friday and found sachet alcohol still being produced, alongside large quantities of PET bottles. Although the factory was initially placed under regulatory hold, a follow-up inspection revealed that the sachet alcohol products had been secretly removed from the premises despite being under enforcement restrictions. The agency described the removal of the products as a serious violation of its directives.
At a second factory, whose identity was withheld, NAFDAC said its enforcement team caught the company allegedly continuing the production of sachet alcoholic beverages in defiance of the nationwide ban. The premises were immediately sealed to halt further production.
The agency also revisited a third company that had earlier been inspected in January, when 22 production machines were placed on hold and millions of PET bottles and sachet packaging materials were confiscated for destruction. During the latest inspection, officials discovered that the company had allegedly broken the agency’s seals, restarted the production machines, and resumed manufacturing sachet alcoholic drinks. Millions of additional PET bottles were also found at the facility, prompting NAFDAC to seal the factory immediately.
Reaffirming its commitment to enforcing the ban, NAFDAC said the operation reflects its zero-tolerance stance against regulatory violations and efforts to safeguard public health by eliminating prohibited alcoholic products from the market. The agency urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report the illegal production or sale of banned sachet alcoholic beverages to the nearest NAFDAC office.
