A rural dentist and social innovator, Dr. Adekemi Adeniyan has been named the winner of the prestigious Roux Prize, a global award that recognizes individuals using health data to improve lives.
Dr. Adeniyan, founder of the Dentalcare Foundation, was honoured for her tireless efforts in bridging the gap in oral health access for underserved communities across Nigeria. Her work has brought free and affordable dental care to thousands of people in rural areas who previously had little or no access to oral health services.
The Roux Prize, established by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, carries a $100,000 cash award and celebrates pioneers who use data-driven strategies to tackle health inequities.
For over a decade, Dr. Adeniyan has been a strong advocate for preventive oral care, community outreach, and health education, particularly among children and women in remote parts of Nigeria. Through mobile clinics and outreach programmes, she and her team have transformed smiles and restored dignity to people long neglected by the healthcare system.
Speaking on the award, Dr. Adeniyan said the recognition affirms her belief that everyone, regardless of where they live—deserves access to quality dental care. “This prize is not just about me; it’s about the millions of Nigerians who suffer silently from oral pain because they cannot afford or access a dentist,” she said.
Her foundation’s innovative model combines field data, storytelling, and advocacy to influence public health policy and improve dental healthcare inclusion at local and national levels.
Health experts have praised her recognition, describing it as a major inspiration for healthcare professionals working in challenging environments. “Dr. Adeniyan’s work demonstrates how data and compassion can drive sustainable health change,” said IHME Director, Dr. Christopher Murray.
With this honour, Dr. Adeniyan joins a select list of global changemakers who have used research and innovation to reshape public health systems.
