The Nigerian Law School has confirmed the death of a 23-year-old student, Faith Alayande, who fell from the rooftop of a hostel at the institution’s Lagos Campus while undergoing an externship programme.
The institution disclosed this in a statement signed by its Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Aderonke O. Osho, on Monday. Alayande was a student of the Nigerian Law School, Enugu Campus, but was temporarily accommodated at the Lagos Campus hostel for the duration of her externship.
According to the Law School, the incident occurred at about 4am on Friday, August 7, 2026. The institution said preliminary information indicated that Alayande fell from the rooftop of the hostel and subsequently died from the incident.
The management said it was working with the appropriate authorities and the deceased’s family to determine the circumstances surrounding her death and ensure that all necessary procedures were followed.
The Lagos State Police Command had earlier confirmed the incident, stating that the hostel matron reported the case after Alayande was found unresponsive on the premises. Police operatives reportedly visited the scene and evacuated her body to a morgue, while investigations into the circumstances of the death continued.
Reports indicated that a hostel mate and a relative had allegedly found a suicide note and began searching for Alayande before she was found unresponsive following the fall. However, the Nigerian Law School did not provide further details regarding the circumstances leading to the incident.
The institution expressed sadness over the student’s death and extended its condolences to Alayande’s family, colleagues and others affected by the loss.
The management also appealed to members of the public and the media to respect the family’s request for privacy while they mourned. It urged everyone to honour the family’s wishes and avoid actions that could further deepen their grief.
The Nigerian Law School reaffirmed its commitment to the safety, welfare and wellbeing of its students and staff.
