The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has alerted Nigerians to a fraudulent social media campaign promoting a fake “free NIN correction” portal designed to steal personal information.
In a public advisory issued on Tuesday via its official X account, the commission described the message and accompanying links as a phishing scam aimed at deceiving unsuspecting members of the public.
NIMC reassured citizens that the National Identity Database remains secure and protected against unauthorized access.
“The public is advised to disregard a fraudulent social media post claiming that a free correction portal is available through certain online links. This is a phishing scam,” the commission stated.
The agency urged Nigerians not to click on suspicious or unauthorized links circulating online and warned against sharing sensitive personal information on unverified platforms.
According to NIMC, all updates, modifications, and corrections to National Identification Number (NIN) records should be carried out only through its official self-service portal or at authorized enrollment and modification centres nationwide.
The commission encouraged citizens to verify information through its official communication channels before taking any action related to their identity records.
NIMC also called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious messages or websites claiming to offer identity-related services outside approved platforms.
The warning comes amid increasing concerns over cyber fraud and identity theft, as scammers continue to exploit social media and fake websites to obtain personal data from unsuspecting victims.
