Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has met with the United States Consul General in Lagos, Rick Swart, as part of ongoing discussions on Nigeria’s democratic future ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi disclosed the meeting in a post shared on his X handle on Tuesday, noting that the engagement focused on strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and the United States, as well as key issues surrounding electoral integrity.
According to him, both parties discussed the need to promote credible, transparent, and interference-free elections in Nigeria, while also ensuring a political environment where opposition parties can actively participate and contribute to democratic development.
He added that the talks extended to economic matters, including trade and investment opportunities between both countries, expressing optimism about improvements in Nigeria’s democratic processes.
“The discussion was very productive, and we are hopeful that, moving forward, Nigeria’s elections will be even more credible and transparent,” Obi said.
The meeting comes amid a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape following Obi’s recent defection from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
His move, alongside that of former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, has reshaped political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
The defections followed months of internal disagreements within the ADC over zoning arrangements, control of party structures, and growing mistrust among key stakeholders — factors that weakened efforts to build a unified opposition front.
Since joining the NDC, both leaders have attracted interest from lawmakers and political actors seeking a more stable platform, further deepening uncertainty about the future cohesion and relevance of the ADC.
Obi had earlier stated that his decision to leave the party was the result of “deep reflection” on Nigeria’s political situation and his desire to contribute more effectively to national development, rather than personal ambition.
