Ondo state government has inaugurated a steering committee on safe schools as part of efforts to strengthen security in educational institutions and prevent attacks on schools across the state.
The commissioner for education, science and technology, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, said the initiative aligns with the federal government’s safe schools programme aimed at safeguarding learning environments amid growing security concerns.
Professor Ajibefun noted that quality education can only thrive in an atmosphere where learners and teachers feel safe and protected.
The committee comprises security chiefs, representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria, the Muslim community, Parent-Teacher Associations and other key stakeholders.
Professor Ajibefun said the committee is expected to focus on measures such as identifying vulnerable schools, promoting perimeter fencing and CCTV installation, engaging local hunters, strengthening community partnerships, conducting school censuses and documenting strangers within school environments.
