Two opposition campaign organisations have criticised President Bola Tinubu for failing to respond to allegations that some serving ministers paid billions of naira to secure their appointments, with one calling on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to open an independent investigation.
The Makinde-Daura Presidential Campaign Organisation, which is on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement, and the African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council both weighed in on the controversy, which was reportedly raised on national television by Alwan Hassan, a spokesperson for the Tinubu Presidential Campaign Council.
In a statement signed by its Director of Strategic Communications, Richard Nnanna Ihediwa, the Makinde-Daura organisation said the Presidency’s failure to address the allegation five days after it was reportedly made had deepened public concern about possible corruption at the highest level of government.
The group said Hassan’s claim, that some ministers paid huge sums to secure their posts and then prioritised recouping their alleged investments, raised serious questions about transparency, accountability and the integrity of ministerial appointments under the current administration.
The campaign organisation urged the EFCC to investigate the matter independently, identify anyone involved and ensure that those found culpable are prosecuted in line with the law.
The ADC Presidential Campaign Council also challenged President Tinubu to investigate Hassan’s allegation.
