Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento have withdrawn from England’s squad ahead of their upcoming Nations League fixtures.
England manager Thomas Tuchel has responded by calling up Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White and Everton’s James Garner to replace the five players.
Palmer’s withdrawal is linked to a minor injury, just days after the Chelsea forward returned to the England squad following his omission from the 2026 World Cup team.
The 24-year-old has started six of Chelsea’s seven matches this season, scoring four goals and providing two assists. He also played the full 90 minutes in Friday’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford.
Manchester United pair Rashford and Mainoo have also pulled out after being assessed by the club following Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Fulham. Both players were substituted during the closing stages of the match.
Rice is also unavailable after playing the entire match in Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat by Brighton, while Newcastle United defender Livramento has withdrawn after making three substitute appearances for his club this season.
Tuchel had previously indicated that Gibbs-White was close to making the original squad. The 26-year-old, who has six England caps, now gets another opportunity after being called up as a replacement.

Garner also returns to the senior squad after missing out on the 2026 World Cup. The Everton midfielder has made two appearances for England, both coming in March.
England will face Spain at Wembley on 26 September before travelling to the Czech Republic on 29 September and Croatia on 3 October. They will then host the Czech Republic on 6 October.
