The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has called on local and international investors to adopt sustainable financing models for the electrification of healthcare facilities across Nigeria, describing the sector as one of the most attractive investment opportunities in Africa.
Tegbe made the appeal at the National Healthcare Electrification Investor Matchmaking Forum held under the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative (NPHI) at the Lagos Civic Centre, Victoria Island.
The forum, organised by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in partnership with UK PACT and hosted by the Minister of State for Health, Dr Iziaq Salako, brought together government officials, development partners, chief medical directors and private sector stakeholders to explore solutions for powering health institutions nationwide.
Speaking at the event, Tegbe commended the Health Ministry for convening the engagement, stressing that reliable electricity remains a critical foundation for effective healthcare delivery rather than a mere infrastructure requirement.
He noted that he has been involved with the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative since its inception, describing it as a personal commitment even before assuming office as Minister of Power, and reaffirmed his support for ongoing collaboration with the health sector.
The minister said the objectives of the initiative align with the Federal Government’s power sector reforms and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, adding that it provides a framework for integrating energy planning into healthcare infrastructure development.
According to him, the programme will support the deployment of grid expansion, renewable and hybrid energy systems for health facilities, while strengthening coordination among power sector agencies, health authorities, regulators and private investors.
Tegbe further emphasized that improving electricity access in hospitals and primary healthcare centres would significantly enhance service delivery, reduce mortality risks and strengthen Nigeria’s overall health outcomes.
