President Bola Tinubu spoke by phone on Monday with former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, offering condolences for the loss of two associates in a fatal car crash along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said he reached out to Joshua personally to express his sympathy and wish him a swift recovery.
“I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for him. He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital,” Tinubu said.
The President also spoke with Joshua’s mother, whom he said was “very appreciative” of the call, and with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was at the hospital. “The Governor assured me that he will do everything possible to ensure AJ receives the best possible attention,” Tinubu added.
Earlier in the day, President Tinubu, who is currently abroad, had expressed profound sympathy for Joshua in a post on his official X account, following reports of the accident which occurred near Sagamu, Ogun State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that the crash, which involved Joshua’s black Lexus SUV and a stationary truck, was caused by excessive speed and wrongful overtaking.
Preliminary reports indicated that five adults were involved, with two fatalities at the scene.
Joshua, a Nigerian-British two-time world heavyweight champion, is receiving medical treatment following the incident.
