Paris Saint-Germain have retained the UEFA Super Cup after defeating Aston Villa 2-1 in a fiercely contested encounter at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg.
Desire Doue scored the decisive goal for the European champions, racing in behind the Villa defence to restore PSG’s lead and secure another major trophy for the French side.
PSG took the lead in the 20th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia cut inside from the left before firing a composed effort beyond Aston Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot.
Villa responded strongly, with 17-year-old Brian Madjo producing a memorable moment on his professional debut.
The young forward became the youngest player to score in the history of the UEFA Super Cup after shrugging off the challenge of Willian Pacho and volleying the ball into the net to level the scores.
Madjo continued to pose a threat and came close to adding to his tally, but three further opportunities narrowly missed the target.
PSG eventually regained control when Doue found space behind the Villa defence and finished to put the French champions back in front.
Aston Villa pushed for another equaliser but PSG held on to claim the trophy in a closely fought contest.
Villa were without several key players, including Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who were unavailable following their extended post-World Cup breaks.
Their absence, however, created opportunities for younger players to make their mark, with Madjo and 19-year-old George Hemmings among those handed the chance to perform on a major European stage.
Despite the defeat, Madjo’s historic goal provided a major highlight for Villa, while PSG continued their impressive run after being crowned champions of Europe.
