The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has carried out waste evacuation and cleanup operations at identified black spots around Costain Roundabout and Apapa Road in Ebute Metta as part of ongoing efforts to tackle indiscriminate waste disposal and improve environmental sanitation.

The intervention, which involved the evacuation of accumulated refuse and general cleanup of the affected areas, forms part of LAWMA’s sustained drive to restore cleanliness and maintain a healthier environment across Lagos communities.

LAWMA reiterated that achieving a cleaner Lagos requires collective responsibility, stressing that while the agency remains committed to prompt and effective waste management interventions, residents must also play their part by disposing of waste through approved channels.

During the cleanup exercise, some residents blamed the persistent waste problem on individuals who allegedly dump refuse at unauthorized locations to avoid paying for proper waste collection services.

The residents expressed concern that despite repeated cleanup efforts by government agencies, illegal dumping continues to undermine sanitation initiatives and contributes to environmental degradation in the area.

They called on the state government to strengthen enforcement measures, including deploying environmental enforcement officers—popularly referred to by some residents as “waste police”—to monitor black spots and sanction offenders.

According to them, stricter enforcement and regular surveillance would help deter indiscriminate waste disposal and encourage greater compliance with environmental regulations.

The residents also urged community members to support government efforts by embracing proper waste management practices and reporting individuals engaged in illegal dumping activities.

The latest cleanup operation underscores the ongoing challenge of waste management in densely populated urban areas and highlights the need for both government intervention and community cooperation in maintaining a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos.
